Sustainable toilet rim blocks

For this project Packadore, a company focused on designing sustainable packaging, was collaborating with Kurz, a company who recycles PET. The initiative would leverage Kurz's process of converting PET waste byproducts into PET granulate.

The PET granulate used for this project is not food-safe and was a lower quality less pure raw material.

Concepts

During my analysis phase of the project I discovered toilet rim blocks are a non-food product which cause a lot of waste, usually disposed after one use and include a lot of packaging material.

Above are renders of the 3 concepts I designed, mainly focussing on the two problems described above.

Final product

After making an LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) and a matrix ranking each concept for multiple aspects like ergonomics, sustainability, innovation, design and one came out as the most sustainable and all-round most potential. Below the final design.

The final design is not sold in a blister pack, saving on packaging material waste. It incorporates "re-use" by making it possible for the consumer to buy refill blocks.
